Learn why it is important to eat healthy and detox before pregnancy
The toxic overload humans are facing today makes it much harder to connect to the subtle state of oneness that our ancestors once had, and we must now work much harder to detoxify and repair our bodies. This is especially important if we are carrying children or if you are planning on becoming pregnant. You want to create a clean body before conception because this something you can’t do while pregnant. Individuals like Villoldo, many other professionals on the planet, and myself are urging people to clean their diet by eliminating some of the toxins that are damaging the gut and taking away the good bacteria needed for health. There is a great movement toward a diet that lacks gluten and is free of sugar, dairy, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and heavy metals. It is important to release these toxins but also vital to replenish our system with the nutrients and supplements required to create healthy gut flora.
Breaking Down the Culprits
Grains and Sugar
Grains are toxic for most of us because we have not evolved to function on the grain-based diet of our present time. Albert Villoldo explained that our ancestors ate a plant-based diet high in fat. He explained that we lost the connection between Spirit and the natural world during the agricultural revolution, which was ten thousand years ago. Villoldo said, “During this time we switched from a fat-and-protein-rich Paleolithic hunter-gatherer diet…to a diet based on wheat, barley, rice, and maize—grains with a high glycemic index, or blood-glucose potential.” When our ancestors began to live on this high glycemic diet of sugar, the centuries that followed were filled with war and conflict.
To make it even worse, we are not presently eating the same wheat that people were given just seventy-five years ago. To eliminate famine post–World War II, a dwarf wheat was introduced, creating twenty times more gluten in breads than older strains. Gluten is found in most grains including wheat, rye. and barley. The carbohydrates from grain break down into glucose. When we are fueled by sugar rather than a fat-based diet, our moods, stability, and mental functioning are negatively affected.
Villoldo explained that the typical American adult consumes one hundred and fifty pounds of added sugar yearly including fake sugars and those in the forms of processed foods. Imagine what we are teaching our children and how we are affecting their moods. Sugar is constantly being used as a reward for our youth and is also a form of emotional relief. It is one molecule off from heroine and stimulates the same receptors in the brain. Sugar is also one of the greatest addictions on the planet and the leading culprit of bad bacteria in the gut and a sluggish brain.
I personally witnessed an epidemic of childhood obesity in healthcare clinics based out of California, which is supposedly one of the healthier states in the country. I helped to manage eleven- to fourteen-year-old girls and boys diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. These patients were taking a lot of medications for their age to control what should have been changed through diet and exercise. One patient, whom we will call Sam, was in a really bad situation and unhealthy state. Not only was he diagnosed with the above at the age of thirteen, but he was also clinically depressed and could not lose the extra one hundred pounds he held because his family kept feeding him the same types of foods. Despite education, they could not see the connection between processed foods and weight gain. They equated “fat free” to “healthy,” when these products are higher in sugar, which can be seen by reading the label.
The only way that we are going to change our families, and the future, is to stop passing down these habitual patterns to our innocent children who don’t know any better. Many families in the clinics were not as bad as the above example because they chose to make changes slowly and noticed which products their children were physically or emotionally reacting to. There are many dietary changes recommended in this book that need to occur for massive changes in our hearts and minds, but you can take this process slowly if needed. Rome was not built overnight. Pick what feels right for you and for your body, and stick to that; the first step in change is just committing to it.
The Truth About GMOs Toxins and Heavy Metals
GMOs are crops that make up more than seventy percent of the foods in American stores. The DNA of these crops has been altered to create new and stronger strands so that the products last longer and are resistant to pests in the field. Villoldo explained that ninety percent of the corn grown in the U.S. has been genetically modified by splicing in Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacteria. The industry says that this does not pose a threat to us, yet studies have shown that Bt causes allergic reactions and intestinal damage to rats and farm workers who have been exposed.
Many supporters of GMOs have said that the crops would reduce chemical fertilizers, increase yield, and be used to feed the world’s hungry. So far this has not been the case, and many European countries have completely banned the products as they are yet to be proven safe. Independent scientists claim that they can cause food allergies, antibiotic resistance, immune suppression, and toxic reactions. The only way to know that you are not eating a GMO food is by buying foods that are “Certified organic by the USDA.”
Roundup is another product to be aware of that is used on crops. It is a pesticide that is believed to alter the DNA of the friendly bacteria in your gut for long periods of time, even after you have stopped eating it. It is commonly found on soy and corn products around America. However, many organic farmers have reported that Roundup was found on their crops despite not using the spray. This is because Monsanto, the company who uses this pesticide, is not properly regulated in the U.S., similar to the case of GMOs. It is important to encourage senators to mandate that independent scientific research studies be conducted on these issues in order not to remain victim to this type of massive food control.
Heavy metals are responsible for more ailments facing our bodies and our planet. Over a very short span we have released thousands of synthesized molecules including flame retardants, nonstick pans, plastic, and medicine in drugs. There is no data on the long-term effects of what these products can do to our health. Villoldo explained that there are eighty-two thousand chemicals approved in the U.S., and only a quarter of them have been tested. Most of these chemicals remain in the environment and affect our food. He said, “Because of the toxins in our brain and nervous system from pesticides and mercury, we can no longer readily experience unity with all creation. No matter how arduously we meditate…” The human brain is not designed to take on this type of toxic overload, and we need to be aware of what we eat, wear, and give to our children.
Dairy
Many conventional milk products such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and butter have been altered with a synthetic GE bovine growth hormone (rBGH). Some studies have linked rBGH to elevated risks of cancer. When cows are given this hormone, they have been known to suffer from shortened life spans, mastitis, increased birth defects, and high rates of diseases, infertility, and stress. Antibiotics fed to livestock can enter the human food chain, affecting the way hormones are metabolized in our bodies. Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom, explained that women get relief from heavy menstrual bleeding and endometriosis when they stop consuming dairy foods. She saw in her personal practice a link to dairy and chronic vaginal discharge, acne, menstrual cramps, fibroids, and intestinal upset. She noted that the patients who changed to organic dairy products sometimes saw a decrease in these symptoms.
Be willing to attempt to eliminate dairy in your own household for a couple of weeks to see the effect it has on your family. Many parents are worried about reducing calcium intake for their children, which is a normal concern. However, milk is not the best source of calcium, and there are a lot of alternatives including increasing the amount of dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, collards, and broccoli. Our pediatricians were against any dairy after the age of two as they saw more harm in their clinic than benefits. For families whose children suffered from dairy allergies, they encouraged parents to give children organic goat’s milk alternating with almond milk and lots of calcium through their food. We personally had one daughter who suffered from a dairy allergy that covered her whole body in eczema or a red rash. She adjusted well to a mix of almond and goat’s milk and loves her dark leafy greens, because that is what she has always been offered.
I encourage you to absorb what you can about reducing the toxic overload in your body. Everything does not have to be given up at once. Small changes go a long way. Choose the alterations to your diet that work for your family and go for it. Even buying organic or reading the labels can make vast alterations to health. If you are planning on having a baby, or already have children, reducing the toxic overload through watching what you consume will help to create a better brain and gut connection and ultimately more health and happiness.
